Patellar luxation is a common orthopedic condition in dogs where the kneecap, or patella, moves out of its normal position, causing pain, lameness, and difficulty walking. This condition can vary in severity, with some dogs experiencing occasional dislocation of the patella, while others may have chronic or permanent luxation.
Certain types of dogs are more susceptible to patellar luxation, including small and toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Yorkshire Terriers, as well as larger breeds like Labrador Retrievers and Great Danes. Additionally, breeds with a predisposition to skeletal abnormalities or conformational issues, such as bowed legs or shallow grooves in the femur, may be at higher risk for developing patellar luxation.
At Cooper Animal Rehab and Wellness, we understand the challenges that patellar luxation poses for both pets and their owners, and we offer specialized canine physical therapy services to help improve this condition. Our Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist is trained and experienced in providing targeted treatment plans aimed at addressing the underlying causes of patellar luxation and promoting optimal healing and function.
